Chapter 15
An Anonymous Tip
Rees’ parents told investigators that their son had come to their house in Hyattsville around 10:30 a.m. on January 12. He’d seemed normal. He’d helped his father to gather wood for the fire before driving off to Washington, D.C., to give music lessons at 3:30 that afternoon.
Rees had arrived on time to Flynn’s music school, neatly dressed but unshaven. His first student had the impression that he’d slept in his clothes. She thought she’d noticed mud on his trousers but couldn’t be certain.
Investigators also located a witness who said that about two weeks before the Jackson abduction, Rees had played in a band in Alexandria, VA, about an hour’s drive from where the Jackson’s car was abandoned on the road.
Another witness put him about 29 miles away from Apple Grove. Although this could have no bearing on the case, in context and with other evidence, it indicated that Rees was familiar with the general area.
As investigators looked for anything that would help them solve the shocking Jackson murders, an anonymous letter arrived in May to the governor of Virginia, J. Lindsay Almond. The writer said that he suspected his friend, Melvin Davis Rees Jr., to be the killer they were seeking.
Rees, he stated, was a self-styled existential philosopher, and he’d once been arrested for assaulting a 36-year-old woman. He’d tried to get her into his car and when she’d refused, he’d tried dragging her in. She’d complained but then dropped the charges, so the case had dissolved.
The writer said that his conversations with Rees were filled with heady ideas and commentary on what life should be, and one evening the subject had turned to murder.
